Organic vs Non-Organic Food: What's the Real Difference?
Share
If you've been searching "organic vs non-organic food", here's the short answer. The real difference is in how the food is grown and raised. Organic farming in the UK follows certified standards that ban weedkillers, allow only a small number of naturally derived pesticides as a last resort, rule out GM ingredients, and keep animals free-range without routine antibiotics. Non-organic farming has far more tools available to it. Choosing organic means choosing a system with fewer inputs, and it's one way to reduce the pesticide residues on your plate.
Alhamdulillah, this is one of the questions I'm asked most. It's also one I asked myself, years before Nourishing Bowl existed, when our family started changing the way we ate. So here's what I've learned, as simply as I can put it.
What is organic farming?
Organic is a whole system of farming, not just one rule. It starts with the soil. Organic farmers build healthy soil through crop rotation, compost and manure rather than artificial fertilisers, and they manage pests by working with nature first: rotating crops, encouraging the insects that eat pests, and choosing hardy varieties.
For animals, the focus is on welfare and space. Organic livestock are free-range, with room to move and graze, and good husbandry is meant to keep them well so that medicine is the exception rather than the routine.
In the UK, organic is a protected word. A farm or food business can only sell something as organic if it has been inspected and certified, and the standards are checked every year.
What organic standards leave out
- Weedkillers (herbicides), which are not allowed at all
- Synthetic pesticides, with only a very short list of naturally derived options permitted as a last resort
- Artificial fertilisers
- Genetically modified ingredients, in crops or in animal feed
- Routine and preventative use of antibiotics in animals
- Artificial colours and sweeteners in organic processed food, with a much shorter list of permitted additives overall
Organic vs non-organic food: how they're grown differently
Non-organic (sometimes called conventional) farming can use a much wider range of pesticides, weedkillers and synthetic fertilisers, and it allows more intensive systems for animals. It's important to say that non-organic food sold in the UK is regulated too. Residues are monitored and are usually found within legal limits.
So organic isn't about fear of everything else. It's a different starting point. Instead of asking "how much is allowed?", organic asks "how little do we need?" That question is what drew me to it.
Is organic food better for your body?
I want to be honest here, because you deserve a straight answer. Researchers are still studying whether organic food is more nutritious, and the findings so far are mixed. I wouldn't promise you that organic food will change your health, and I'd gently be wary of anyone who does.
What is clearer is this: eating organic is one way to reduce how much pesticide residue you take in, and organic processed food carries far fewer additives. For me, that's enough. It means I know more about what went into the food before it reached the plate, and that's what I want for my own family. I eat this food every day, and it's what I feed my son.
For us, organic also sits alongside something deeper. As Muslims we're asked to eat what is halal and tayyib, permissible and also good and wholesome. Organic farming is one of the ways we try to honour the tayyib part, by caring about how the food was grown, not just whether it was permitted.
How to tell if food is really organic
This is where a lot of people get caught out, so here's what to check.
- Look for the certifier code. Certified organic products in the UK carry a code that starts with "GB-ORG", along with the name of the certifying body.
- Check the product name, not just the ingredients. A product can only be called organic if almost all of its farmed ingredients (at least 95%) are organic. If "organic" only appears next to one or two items in the ingredients list, the rest of the product isn't organic.
- Think about the small things. Oil, spices, herbs and stock go into almost everything. In a ready meal, they're where organic most often slips.
How we cook with organic at Nourishing Bowl
When I started, I decided organic couldn't stop at the headline ingredients. So we cook with organic olive oil, organic vegetables, and organic herbs and spices, the small things that quietly make up most of what you eat.
We buy from specialist organic suppliers rather than picking things up wherever is cheapest, and every ingredient is certified. Honestly, it's one of the reasons organic home cooking is so hard to keep up during a busy week: you can't buy half a chicken breast or a pinch of organic cumin. You buy everything, and then you need the time to cook it.
Organic vs non-organic food: your questions
Is organic food healthier than non-organic?
The research is still mixed on nutrition. What's clearer is that organic farming uses far fewer pesticides, so eating organic is one way to reduce your exposure to pesticide residues.
Why does organic food cost more?
Organic farms usually produce lower yields, animals have more space, and the farms pay for yearly inspection and certification. You're paying for a slower, more careful way of farming.
Is organic meat automatically halal?
No. Organic and halal are separate standards with separate certification. Meat can be organic without being halal, and halal without being organic. We look for both, and for tayyib too.
How do I know if a ready meal is genuinely organic?
Check that "organic" is in the product name with a certifier code, not just next to a few ingredients. And look at the small things like oil, herbs and spices.
With gratitude
Thank you for reading, and for caring enough about your food to ask the question. If you'd like organic, halal and tayyib meals without spending your evenings cooking, you can see this week's menu. And if someone you love is going through a hard season, gifting a month of nourishing meals is a gentle way to feed them from afar.
With gratitude and duas,
Rabia
